While I have a few general rules that apply to every person, my general feeling is that every person is different, and therefore the “rules” need to be tweaked for each individual. Without judgement or bias, I will look at your situation holistically--what are your current habits? How many people will this process affect? What is the root of the disorganization? Only by getting to know you as a whole person can we come up with a plan of action together.
There are 3 types of things that generally need organizing. I like to classify them as such:
- You can organize your stuff
- You can organize your documents
- You can organize your life
Organizing your stuff means just that. By “stuff” I mean your shoes, clothes, bags, sporting equipment, food, medicine cabinet, etc. This will often mean that you need organizational items running from a mug to hold your pencils all the way up to shelving units in your garage with large plastic bins.
Organizing your documents includes filing away your passport, bank statements, letters, old birthday cards, receipts and business cards from places you’ve been. This also includes the organizing of the dreaded 4-letter-word--MAIL! Organizing documents usually involves some kind of filing system with either a filing cabinet or file boxes.
Organizing your life revolves around putting the responsibilities of your life down on paper. That usually has to do with making up a calendar and maybe even daily “to-do” lists.
At saneaty, I believe in preserving, recycling, “going green”--call it what you will. My first attempt in helping you will be to try to bring new life to older objects that you already own by using them in unexpected ways, or simply coating them in a fresh coat of paint! That being said, we will make a plan together to see whether what you already have in place for organization will be enough for your current situation. There will be times when we will need to supplement, or even completely replace your current organizational system.
